With Saurer Spinning Solutions we were able to work on the project dark mill: The next generation of milling factories.

The production of yarn is a complicated and highly technological process. Saurer Spinning Solutions produces the factory machines for this process. Our project focused on one particular process in the yarn production: The drafting, where the yarn is stretched to lengthen it.

Rolls go with increasing speed to stretch the yarn. Pressure and distance are changed with every type of yarn.

The drafting system is positioned in the upper part of the machine …

… causing a lot of problems and inconvinience in use.

the system is only accessible through the top and difficult to reach

no display for the pressure and distance settings of the rolls

adjustments is only possible by eye or with improvised tools

The solution is a drafting system that is automated run by stepper motors. So our challenges were to design a new version of the drafting system that mirrors Saurers corporate identity, construct a possible mechanism and reimagine the display for pressure and distance of the rolls.

The mechanism inside was developed with engineers from the KIT Karlsruhe and is kept under secrecy.

The final drafting system is automated by stepper motors and can be controlled through a central control screen. The LED display that is integrated into the handle only lights up for tests and on errors.

The design was presented to the engineering department of Saurer Spinning Solutions and ver appreciated. The whole project was incorporated into the development plan for Saurers’ Vision of the next generation of automated milling productions: the darkmill.
